Some people think that a person who is proactive is someone who is pushy and bossy, someone who is far too aggressive in dealing with people and problems. But that is not what being proactive is all about. A proactive person is someone who prefers to take matters into his own hands rather than be swept away by these matters that come upon him. A proactive person is someone who chooses how he should act on a given situation, not just react and lay the blame on someone else's door. A proactive person is someone who takes responsibility, anticipates problems and comes up with solutions to problems rather than be the problem himself.

A proactive person is a person who saves time simply because he acted decisively on a certain matter. It actually takes less time to be proactive than simply to react to any given situation. When faced with a crisis, a reactive person would respond with shock, let out a spate of complaints, point fingers at other people, and then be compelled to formulate a solution. The latter does not even hold true all the time. A proactive person, on the other hand, may respond with shock when faced with a crisis, but his next response would be to quietly think and reflect on the situation and then act on a solution. There is less time wasted and less people hurt when a person is proactive.

Also, when you exercise being proactive rather than being reactive, you add value to yourself. You prove to your superiors, your peers and your subordinates that you are a person who is oriented towards coming up with answers and finding solutions instead of adding to the problem at hand. You increase your worth and enlarge your circle of influence because people prefer to be around someone they can rely on.

How can you become a proactive person? The first step you need to take towards becoming a proactive person is to take a hard look at yourself. Are you someone who blames others for your own failings or are you someone that recognizes your own failings and does something to correct them? When crunch time happens, do you mope about and complain that you cannot do anything, or do you gird your loins and just do what you have to do? Figure out for yourself whether you are the reactive or the proactive type; if you are reactive, make the decision to stop blaming other people and other factors outside your control and instead deal with the things that are actually in your control.

Gear your mind towards finding solutions rather than towards finding people to blame for your problems. Remember that the only factor that you can take full control of in any situation you face is yourself. Save yourself the heartache and the wasted effort of blaming other people and instead look for solutions to your problems.

Whenever you need to accomplish a task, make it a point to plan ahead before you start working on the task. Create flow charts and make lists if you have to. Business guru Brian Tracy teaches what is called the 10/90 rule. According to this rule, 10% of the time you spend planning on how to accomplish a task can save you at most 90% of the time needed to complete it. That is because planning ahead brings to your attention the resources, materials and information you need to accomplish the task. It also helps you anticipate the problems and challenges you may encounter along the way.

Learn to set goals and learn to prioritize the activities that are in line with your goals. Make use of calendars, organizers and to-do lists. Doing this puts the things that you consider to be very important to you right in front of you. Moreover, this helps you recognize just what things and activities you need to delegate or eliminate so that you can devote more time to doing the things you consider to be important.

Establish a routine in getting your tasks done, and document this routine into a flow chart or a guideline that will serve as an aid in case someone else has to do the tasks that you need to do. A simple and streamlined routine not only saves time but also eliminates the possibility of committing mistakes. To further save time and reduce mistakes brought about by repetition, you should automate the simple tasks that you do repeatedly in the course of the day by using software.

Do not procrastinate in acting upon a situation that you have foreseen would become a problem later on. In preventing possible problems from developing into full-blown crises, you save time and effort that could have been wasted in dealing with them.

A proactive person is someone who takes problems into his own hands and sets his mind towards finding solutions rather finding people to blame for these problems. He takes control of what he could control instead of pitying himself for the things he cannot control. He takes responsibility and gears himself for action.
